Dwayne Anderson is the main protagonist of Visage. He is the game's final resident that lives through the past traumas of the previous residents.

Background[]

Chapters 1-3[]

In the first three chapters, Dwayne lives through the lives of three past residence. During these, he receives calls from Rose who reveals he hasn't been seen outside for three weeks. In these chapters, the former residence's ghosts will try to kill him. In chapters two and three, both Dolores and Rakan know his name, speaking it vocally. This could imply that he had something to do with their deaths.

Chapter 4[]

Chapter 4 is Dwayne's story, that is told through a series of tapes. Dwayne will pick a tape and watch an old flashback that depicts a family having fun. During these clips, the video will be interrupted with a scene of what Dwayne is supposed to do in the house next. The first scene tells him to climb down into a hole. Once he does, he will walk to the back of the room where there is old-times furniture, and sitting on one of the seats will be a television. Dwayne sits down and the T.V. turns on, revealing a man wearing a plague mask. He will greet Dwayne and tell him he's been waiting for him for so long. He will talk to Dwayne about his true identity (that being other than his name), all the while encouraging Dwayne to take more sips of alcohol. Dwayne talks to him but is not heard by the player, only by the masked man. Upon telling him that he's been seeing things, the man will make the grotesque humanoids form chapter 3 appear. He tells Dwayne that the only way to make them go away is to keep drinking. After a few more sips, a piece of a mask will appear for Dwayne to pick up.

The next clip will lead him to a room where he will sign a paper that was marked with letters that implied that he didn't care. Upon sighing, he will turn around and walk through the mob of grotesque creatures yet again. He will find a key and another piece of the mask in their center. Picking them up will prompt them to choke him out.

The next tape leads him to a room where he will need to play a record that makes one of the walls disappear. After vanishing it will become an entrance to a grocery store, only stocked with beer. Dwayne stocks his cart until its full while a menacing voice talks to him over the intercom. The voice, like the mask, encourages Dwayne to purchase more and more beer. At the end of this segment, a cutscene will play that shows him watching the television and sipping beer. His daughter will want a bedtime story, but he will be too busy to pay attention to her. His wife gets involved, at first getting angry but then becoming concerned after reflecting on how good a person he used to be.

The next tape will lead him to a room with a door strung with chains. Dwayne must take pills placed in front of him in the right order in order to make them come off. After making them come off and walking to the door, they will reattach themselves. Dwayne will then open doors around the room which will make the chains again unlock. The first will have a creature painting, the second will have a glass of water on a table, the third will be a room filled with pill bottles, and the last will be a brick wall. The door completely unlocked will reveal a room completely filled with cards labeled with different words that describe his mental state (anxiety, depression, etc). These cards will all fly away and lead him to what seems to be an otherworldly pocket dimension. It is filled with the grotesque creatures holding their heads, and a line of them marching into a glowing mouth in the back of the room. Dwayne will make his way down stone steps until he reaches a river that he needs to cross. Once he crosses it he will reach a light house, inside of which is furniture similar to that form the beginning room. The masked man will again appear and tell him that it's a wonderful thing that he's entrapped all of these people in that world, living there for all of eternity. He tells Dwayne to walk to the roof and see what he's created. He does, and at the top is a small table with a candle and a picture of him with his wife. The scene will switch to his wife confronting him about his pills, being concerned about it. She asks him if he wants to kill himself, slowly after she does her voice becomes distorted. She then tells him that she would be happy to help him kill himself, describing doing it in ways similar to the deaths of the other residence. The camera pans around, showing the entire family in masks. She finally tells him to forget it and to just do it himself, sending him down into a pit with a flaming face. After waking up he will find a mask piece on a chair in the room he wakes up in.

The next tape will tell him to find a key which opens a box with a handle inside of it which is used to get into a cellar door. The cellar door leads into a hospital room, where it is revealed on an employee wordlist that Dwayne was a Doctor. He will obtain an axe, which setts off an alarm, ad proceed to make a hole in the wall. Crawling through this hole will lead him back home to his garage. His garage will now be filled with the Tar Guy's foot prints, leading through out the house, and back to the latch. Going back will allow him to hind the mask piece.

The next tape will lead him to an underground area where he will need to light the passageway with only a few working lights. Failing to do so will have him attacked by the Tar Guy. He must go from each side of the room and destroy brick walls using a sledge hammer. The final wall will have an exit sign over it and a piece of the mask in the wall, grabbing which will tear it down.

The next tape will lead him to a giant steel door. Opening it will lead him to a giant factory-like facility. He will then make his way to a red button that opens up his next section. The next section will be another pipe room, making his way through here will allow him to find a key that also spawns the Tar Guy. After a vent to escape the break room he will make his way to a locker room and find a locker with tar all over its base. Opening it will reveal a keycard belonging to "Lewis Taylor". This key opens a door that leads to a room filled with pipes connecting to a well. The floor is also completely water. Over the well hangs a tree with a singular apple. Picking it will cause it to rot, and so he drops it into the well. After this bodies will begin appearing in the water, seemingly deceased. After turning around he will find the Tar Guy grabbing him, and is then pulled into the well. He will wake up to a broken and hallowed out heater with the last piece of the mask inside.

After all the pieces are found, Dwayne will need to make his way to a sacrificial room with items from the three previous guests placed on pedestals. Putting this on will make the rain outside stop, and Dwayne will need to make his way down to a door, upon opening it will shin a bright light with his family at the other end.

Trivia[]

  • It is hinted that Dwayne and his family are Catholic because of the crucifix decorations, statues of Jesus Christ, and the confessional booth that acts as a progress room.
  • Dwayne suffers from a mental illness, as seen by the pills scattered around the house and the stress mechanic in-game.
    • Notably, pill bottles are prescribed in Dwayne's name, and are labeled Chlorpromazine, commonly used to treat schizophrenia and manic depression.
  • Dwayne appears to be an alcoholic because dozens of beer cans and other alcohol containers are scattered throughout the house, including Dwayne's office.
  • The Radio at the start of the game was saying "We have a special guest with us today.... His name is Dwayne Anderson... He killed his whole family." This indicates that Dwayne actually killed his family.
  • Dwayne seemed to have shot himself at the end of the opening cutscene, which means that the protagonist is Dwayne himself is a ghost in a purgatory state, because we see him get up from the same room he murdered his family in a pile of blood.
  • Many players have speculated that Dwayne was involved in Project MK Ultra (or some variation of it) due to the time period, his supposed background in chemistry, and was paid to develop psychoactive substances to poison the water plant with. He then proceeded to observe the various people in the house that were affected. It's believed that he's drugged himself with the same substances he used on the people out of shame and guilt.
